ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Voters in Rockdale County went to the polls Tuesday to decide whether a one percent sales and use tax will go toward the Rockdale County School District for educational purposes.
In a special election vote for an Education Special Option Local Sales Tax (ESPLOST), the new tax was voted on and will now improve security, technology, infrastructure, and transportation over the next 20 calendar quarters.
The question appeared on all Nonpartisan Special Election Ballots in Rockdale County. Voters could have chosen either a Party Ballot (Republican or Democrat) for the presidential primary or a Nonpartisan Special Election Ballot.
The question appeared just like this on the ballot for voters in the county:
Shall a one percent sales and use tax for educational purposes of the Rockdale County School District (the "School District") be imposed within Rockdale County, for a maximum period of time of 20 calendar quarters, for the purposes of providing funds to pay the costs of:
(1) acquiring, constructing, and installing safety and security property improvements, safety and security equipment, and safety and security technology improvements for existing schools and other facilities;
(2) acquiring instructional, administrative, and structural technology improvements (including, without limitation network modernization and modernization of classrooms, laptops and other individual devices for students, teachers, and staff) for existing schools and other facilities;
(3) modifying, adding to, renovating, repairing, improving, and equipping existing school buildings, existing athletic facilities,and other buildings and facilities useful or desirable in connection therewith; acquiring land for future schools or expansions of current schools; and acquiring any necessary property therefor, both real and personal;
(4) acquiring, improving, and refurbishing school buses and support vehicles; and
(5)acquiring instructional supplies (including, without limitation textbooks, digital access licenses, software licenses, learning resources, musical instruments, uniforms, art program equipment) in each case for the School District, all at a maximum cost of $135,000,000?
Voters then selected “Yes” or “No.”
