Here's what happened in the first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in 2020

It was ugly and helped lead to changes in the 2024 debate.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The first presidential debate between then-President Donald Trump and Joe Biden back in 2020 was memorable, even if many people probably tried to forget it.

It was held September 29, 2020 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was the year of COVID and social unrest. 

There were frequent interruptions. A Washington Post analysis found that the candidates interrupted host Chris Wallace or their opponent 90 times in the 90-minute debate. Biden later called the debate “a national embarrassment.” 

Changes were made to the second debate, and have been modified even more for the first 2024 debate in Atlanta.

Rules for the June 27, 2024 debate include:

  • Microphones will be muted except for the candidate whose turn it is to speak.
  • Candidates will not be allowed to bring any written notes to the debate; they will be provided with only pen and paper. 
  • Interaction with campaign staff during breaks will be prohibited
