Extended interview | Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene seeking a third term in Congress

The Republican currently represents Northwest Georgia's 14th Congressional district

ATLANTA — Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican, is seeking a third term representing Georgia's 14th congressional district.

In an extended interview recently taped with 11Alive's Sunday politics show, The Georgia Vote, Greene laid out her views on abortion, school safety, immigration, and more.

The Georgia Vote also spoke with her opponent, Shawn Harris. See the extended interview with him here.

Abortion access

Greene said she supports Georgia's so-called 'Heartbeat Bill' that bans abortions in most cases after about six weeks of pregnancy.

"I support Georgia's 'Heartbeat Bill," said Greene. "But I also support having a more serious conversation about abortion. If we're going to talk about abortion together, we should actually talk about what it is. It's the murder of a child. It's the murder of an innocent human being."

11Alive asked if she would support a nationwide version of Georgia's 'Heartbeat Bill' if it was up for a vote in Congress.

"Our position as Republicans have been made clear. We made it clear at our convention," said Greene. "President Trump has made it clear that since Roe v. Wade has been overturned, we are giving that back to the states. That's what the Supreme Court did. And we've done a great job here in Georgia with the 'Heartbeat Bill.'"

School safety

Keeping campuses safe was top of mind for many Georgia voters following the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School earlier this year. 11Alive asked Greene what she'd do to stop school shootings if elected.

"I work in a place where there are men armed with guns, every type of firearm from AR-15s to handguns," said Greene. "I enjoy the privilege of being protected by those armed guards. So does Joe Biden, so does Kamala Harris, so does Donald Trump. So do all of us. And I think our kids, and I'll say this as a mother, are our most precious possession. We should be guarding these kids the exact same way."

There were school resources on campus at the time of the Apalachee shooting and while they were hailed as heroes for their rapid response, the attacker was still able to kill multiple victims.

11Alive asked Greene if she would support any kind of gun control legislation in Congress.

"No, I'm not for gun control," she said. "I'm a 100% supporter of the Second Amendment. Also, as a woman, I'm a gun owner and many times if I'm home alone or in the years past locking up my business at night, I needed to be armed to protect myself. I believe in good guys with guns and good women with guns. And I believe in the American people's rights to keep and bear arms."

The economy

When asked how she'd fix America's inflation problem if re-elected, Greene said she'd focus on spending.

"We have to start with the core principle of what causes inflation, which has been the massive amount of government spending. I'm one of those that's critical of not only Democrats but Republicans as well and Congress has been spending too much money, not just for a few years, but actually for decades," said Greene. "And I'm a fiscal conservative. I've been a business owner pretty much all of my adult life and it's important to me to work with my colleagues in Congress to reduce spending. If the American people can balance their budget. I think Congress should do the same thing,"

Immigration

"We have to secure our border," said Greene. "Every country around the world secures their border and it's absolutely ridiculous for America to not secure our border."

"Fentanyl is also an epidemic; it's a plague here in America," Greene continued. "Fentanyl is coming across the border every single day. So, I think securing our border is the right thing to do. We passed a very good bill in Congress, Republicans did, it's a strong border security bill, and I'd love to see President Trump sign it into law."

Accepting results of the presidential election

With the contested 2020 election still on the minds of many voters casting their ballots this year, 11Alive asked Greene if she'd support the winner of the 2024 presidential race -- regardless of the outcome.

Rep. Greene: I will support once we see how the election turns out. I believe in election integrity. I believe that the citizens of our country should be able to cast their vote in a system that is transparent and a system that provides the correct results and so I'm going to watch the process happen and we'll see how it turns out.

11Alive's Zach Merchant: But right now, it sounds like you're not going to say declaratively you'll support the winner.

Rep Greene: I'm going to watch the election happen. We're in early voting right now, Election Day [is] November 5th. We'll see how the results turn out and make sure there's no election fraud, so I look forward to seeing that happen.
