The leader of the Democratic Party of Georgia said she continues to support President Joe Biden's re-election campaign.
"Right now, President Biden is the only person who can make the decision if he is going to remain in this race," said Rep. Nikema Williams. "As long as President Biden is at the top of this ticket, I am standing with my president because he has stood with the American people time and time again."
The congresswoman chair of the state party's comments came during a Wednesday interview taping for 11Alive's Sunday politics show, The Georgia Vote, amid swirling questions about the president's viability as a candidate after a politically damaging performance on the debate stage in Atlanta last week.
"We all saw the debate," Williams acknowledged. "It was not a good night and we were all concerned about what we saw on Thursday night."
But the congresswoman touted what she described as President Biden's "three and a half years of accomplishments" and said his record in office outweighs concerns over his debate performance.
"My mission is clear," she said. "We must defeat Donald Trump."
When asked if President Biden was the best person to accomplish that mission, she said "I am standing with our ticket and as long as he is on the ballot, he is our Democratic nominee and I'm going to everything that I can to make sure that he's re-elected."
