'We were not expecting this big of a turnout' | Car show fundraiser raises $40,000+ for Apalachee High

Organizers say about 1,000 vehicles participated.

BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Hundreds of cars participated in a car show fundraiser for Apalachee High School this weekend.

Sunday, the show took over Carl-Bethlehem Road near Home Depot. Vehicles stretched from the hardware store into the City of Winder, slowing down traffic along the way.

Justin Boldin is a DJ who said he helped organize the event.

"We were not expecting this big of a turnout — a few hundred cars. We're actually at... right at 1,000 cars," Boldin said.

Boldin said the support stretched as far as Japan. Between registration, silent auctions, raffles, and donations, the event raised more than $40,000.

There have been more fundraisers than you can count since the shooting tragedy at Apalachee High School on Sep. 4 that killed two teachers and two students.

All of the proceeds from the car show will go to the school and to the victims.

Michael Jira said he's the Apalachee High football team scoreboard operator. He volunteered at the car show and has been overwhelmed by the turnout.

"People are reaching out from everywhere. I mean, we have cars from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas. I mean, they just came from everywhere to support Apalachee," Jira said.
