WHAT WE FOUND
The Carter Center confirmed Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 16, that the former president has now voted by mail.
This story previously reported The Carter Center shared that Jimmy Carter hadn't cast his vote but intended to do so by mail in the coming weeks; the team said it would let 11Alive know when he did so. Hours later, The Carter Center shared an update that he had indeed voted by mail on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
Any social media claims that were floating around that Jimmy Carter had voted before Wednesday are false.
According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s 2024 election calendar, absentee ballots in the state were not scheduled to be mailed until Oct. 7. Additionally, early in-person voting didn’t begin until Oct. 15, making it impossible for Carter to cast his vote by Oct. 4, as a social media post claimed.
Carter, who celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 1 in Plains, Georgia, remains in hospice care.
