ATLANTA — A pair of furious finishes highlighted the AJC Peachtree Road Race on Thursday morning, as the women's champion overtook the lead runner down the stretch while the men's winner held off a last-grasp dash from behind.
Stacy Ndiwa of Kenya won the women's race with an unofficial time of 31:12. She overtook Irene Cheptai just over the last few meters of the race to cross the finish line in first.
In the men's race, Sabastian Sawe of Kenya appeared to be home free as he rounded the final turn alone and ran the final stretch with a large lead, but Daniel Ebenyo came in running with a purpose behind and nearly caught up.
Instead, Sawe crossed first with an unofficial time of 28:03, just two seconds ahead of the hard-charging Ebenyo.
Sawe, 28, adds the Peachtree to a collection of accomplishments that includes gold in the half marathon at last year's World Road Running Championships. Ndiwa has previously won gold herself at the 2018 African Championships in he 10,000m.
The two followed on the earlier race wins in the wheelchair division by Daniel Romanchuk for the men and Susannah Scaroni for the women.
