Coco Gauff on Wimbledon third round comeback: When I was down, I said I can fight back

"I knew that I could go longer," she said."I'm young and I have a lot of energy."

At 15 years old, Cori "Coco" Gauff is proving she strong, determined, and that she belongs on the tennis court.

The Atlanta native is being called the "comeback kid" after her Wimbledon win on Friday against Polona Hercog of Slovenia on Centre Court. She's now getting to advance to the fourth round.

After Friday's match, Gauff talked to the media about the game and how her life changed instantly when she beat five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the first round.

She said before she played Williams, there was one kid who asked to take a photo of her as she headed to the court. Since then, Gauff essentially became a household name overnight.

“The next day after I played Venus everybody was screaming my name. It’s just pretty surreal how life changes in the matter of seconds," she said.

After her match with Williams, she beat 2017 semifinalist Magdalena Rybarikova in the second round. But she didn't stop there. Many were surprised with Gauff's magical performance against Hercog. In an unbelievable second set, Gauff forced a tiebreak after being down 5-2.

“When I was down 5-2, I was just like I can fight back," she said. "I just need to hold serve and then break and then we’ll see what will happen from there.”

Even though the match seemed long to some, Gauff said she wasn't tired.

"I knew that I could go longer," she said."I'm young and I have a lot of energy."

As she continues to push forward, she is trying to stay composed.

“My parents were just telling me to stay calm stay focus because the tournament's not over yet," she said.

Her mom is also becoming an internet sensation. Every step of the way, she cheers her on along with Gauff's dad. Social media loves to see her mother's fired-up reactions.

"She's gonna go viral, I know," Gauff said.

Although the social media craze about her made her smile during the interview, there was one post made by a celebrity that shocked Gauff

"Beyonce's mom posted me on Instagram and I was screaming," she said cheerfully. "I hope Beyonce saw that. I hope she told her daughter about me because I would love to go to a concert."

Gauff, who was born in Georgia and is now based in Florida, is the 12th-youngest player to compete in women's singles at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament since professionals were first admitted in 1968. The 11 who were younger all got spots in the draw via direct entry, rather than qualifying.
