ATHENS, Ga. — A woman who accused University of Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young of assaulting her while she was pregnant has asked police that her charges now be dropped, according to a new report by ESPN.
Colbie Young was arrested on Oct. 8 on two charges of misdemeanor battery and one charge of misdemeanor assault on an unborn child.
Now, according to ESPN, the woman has retracted her statement to Athens-Clarke County Police and has requested that all charges be dismissed.
According to a police report from Athens-Clarke County PD, Young was visited by an ex-girlfriend and got into a heated argument that eventually turned physical.
The young woman claimed that throughout the argument, Young grabbed her arm and physically pulled her out of his room and later "squeezed her torso and abdomen very hard."
The officer who responded mentioned that she had a "bruise and discoloration on the bottom right side of her chest where it meets the abdomen." The office did not note any injuries to her home.
While the young woman declined to be taken to the hospital by EMS, police said she did agree to seek medical attention and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The police report notes that Young denied ever grabbing her. When asked how she received her injuries, he said it wasn't from him, according to police.
Young was eventually taken to the Athens-Clarke County Jail with a bond set at $2,500, jail records show.
After the arrest, Young was subsequently suspended by Georgia head coach Kirby Smart indefinitely one day after his arrest.
“I got to speak to him this morning, you know, and he’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved,” Smart said on the weekly Southeastern Conference coaches conference call the week of the arrest.
“We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it," he said, "but had a good meeting with him this morning, and we’re committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents. And it’s very unfortunate.”
Smart said at the time that he wants players “to be responsible in decision-making on and off the field. And you know, this is obviously a really tough situation.”
