SCAD Atlanta fencer wins one, loses one at Paris Olympics

Antonio Chen, competing for Taiwan, bowed out in the round of 32 on Monday in the men's foil tournament.

PARIS, France — A fencer at the Savannah College of Art and Design - Atlanta campus left his mark Monday at the Paris Olympics.

Competing for Taiwan, Antonio Chen advanced to the round of 32 before bowing out to a host nation favorite in France's Enzo Lefort.

Chen, who competes under his given name Chen Yi-Tung, defeated Lebanese fencer Philippe Wakim 15-13 to advance out of the first round.

His round of 32 match was again close -- though this time he was on the wrong end of the result, losing 15-12 to Lefort. The Frenchman, for his part, reached the quarterfinals before bowing out himself.

Chen was the first male fencer from Taiwan to qualify in 36 years, according to SCAD, after he won a Zonal qualifying tournament for Asia and Oceania in Dubai earlier this year to book his ticket to Paris.

Chen previously reached the quarterfinals at the 2022 Asian Games, and won a bronze medal with the Chinese Taipei team at the 2022 Asian Fencing Championships.
