PARIS, France — An Olympic diver from Georgia had one of the best overall results of his career Thursday in Paris as he registered a fourth-place finish in the 3m springboard final.
Carson Tyler, the 2024 NCAA national champion in this event, completed his six dives with a total score of 429.25, including saving his best for last with a 78.75 on his sixth and final dive -- a reverse 1 1/2 somersaults 3 1/2 twists in the free position.
It did not get him close to a medal -- with Chinese stars Xie Siyi and Wang Zongyuan going for gold and silver on scores of 543.60 and 530.20, and Mexico's emerging young star Osmar Olvera placing third with a total score of 500.40. But it was a strong improvement on the seventh place Tyler registered in the semifinal round, in an event that is arguably his second best.
Tyler will still compete in the 10m platform event at the Olympics -- he won the 10m at the Team USA Trials and is the back-to-back NCAA national champion in that event.
The 20-year-old is from Moultrie, Georgia and currently competes at Indiana University.
The 10m platform preliminary round is scheduled for Friday, August 9 at 4 a.m. ET (10 a.m. Paris time) -- extending a busy few days for Tyler.
