PARIS, France — The top-ranked table tennis player in the world is out at the Paris Olympics tournament in just the third round with a stunning loss Wednesday to the world's 26th-ranked player.

Wang Chuqin, who already has a gold in Paris from the mixed doubles tournament, was beaten 4-2 by Sweden's Truls Moregard.

The 24-year-old has numerous international medals from top-shelf competitions, including seven World Championship golds across team, doubles and mixed doubles events. He won silver in the singles tournament at last year's World Championships.

Wang could not find a rhythm Wednesday in the round-of-32 match with Moregard, who himself won silver in the singles tournament at the 2021 World Championships.

Moregard won the first two sets, 12-10 and 11-7, before Wang battled back with two sets of his own, 11-5 and 11-7.

But Moregard turned it back around and took the final two sets back-to-back, 11-9 and a11-6, to complete the massive upset. After the winning point, Moregard dropped to the ground in disbelief.

It will now be the first trip to an Olympics round of 16 for Moregard. He's due to play Taiwan's Kao Cheng-Jui, currently ranked 32nd in the world.
