What happens to the cars left behind as Atlanta Airport South parking lot closes?

Good news is it's mostly an easy answer that should, in theory, leave anyone who left their car behind with plenty of time to get it back.

ATLANTA — At the stroke of midnight Monday morning, the Atlanta Airport's South economy lot officially closed for an expansion project that won't be complete until 2026.

We have resources available if you need to look for alternative parking options, but in the meantime you might also be wondering - what, exactly, happens to the cars still in the lot? Perhaps (but hopefully not) you are even among those to have left a car behind.

Well, good news is it's mostly an easy answer that should, in theory, leave anyone who left their car behind with plenty of time to  get it back.

For now and for the next few weeks, while cars will no longer be able to enter the lot, they can in fact still leave. An airport spokesperson told 11Alive's Jerry Carnes that the construction crew that will begin work on the new deck is still a few weeks out from taking over the area.

So, short answer: If you left for a trip before Monday and happened to park in the South lot, you'll be able to return to Atlanta and drive it out of the lot as if everything's normal (unless you're on a very long trip).

But what about the cars that do stay left behind? The airport said they'll be relocated, though exactly how that will work - and to where they'll go - isn't clear at this time.

Best to just go collect your car, or make arrangements for it to be collected, if for some reason you were planning to leave it there for multiple months.
