Hartsfield-Jackson airport sets new 2023 screening record over Memorial Day weekend

Officials said last Thursday, the airport had a record-breaking day with TSA screening 98,817 travelers as they headed out for the Memorial Day weekend.

ATLANTA — The world's busiest airport is once again living up to its name and setting new records for the number of travelers it's screening in 2023.

Hartsfield-Jackson officials said last Thursday, the airport had a record-breaking day with TSA screening 98,817 travelers as they headed out for the Memorial Day weekend. Officials added this is the third-highest day in the Atlanta airport's history.

In comparison, officials said TSA screened nearly 9.8 million travelers at airports nationwide over the holiday weekend. Last Friday, officials said nationally-- a new post-pandemic single-day record was set with 2.74 million travelers.

In Atlanta, Airport leaders said they anticipated hosting 2.1 million travelers from Thursday, May 25, through Wednesday, May 31. Officials are still working to determine the exact number of travelers who went through Hartsfield-Jackson. They said its final report will be released in mid-June but added TSA's screening numbers indicate the growing number of travelers.

Officials said they anticipate that high volume of travelers to continue throughout the summer.

"We are happy to see pre-pandemic passenger numbers back at ATL," Airport General Manager Balram “B” Bheodari said. "This signifies the resilience of the aviation industry and the unwavering determination of travelers to embrace the joy of air travel once again. We extend our gratitude to all passengers for their patience during the busy travel periods and to our employees and partners as we remain steadfast in our commitment to connect our community to the world."

As summer travel continues, officials advise travelers to plan ahead, stay informed and arrive early. You can find additional airport resources online here.
