ATLANTA — A wild swing in weather has descended upon Atlanta, with stormy conditions overnight giving way to sleet and even snow in some parts of the northern metro, and along with all that something you're probably hearing outside: really strong winds.
A wind advisory is in place through much of Saturday around metro Atlanta and more broadly across a large chunk of Georgia.
That advisory will remain in place through 7 p.m., which means people will need to be alert for hazards such as downed trees and power lines. Thanks to the winds overnight and storms, there are now thousands of customers across metro Atlanta without power Saturday morning.
So where have we seen the strongest winds? 11Alive Meteorologist Andrew Wilson shared on Twitter where there have been the most significant wind gusts, including a couple in excess of 50 mph.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport saw a gust of 56 miles per hour, while Chamblee saw one of 51 mph.
Gainesville, Dekalb County and Camp Merrill also experienced gusts in the mid-50 mph range.
Beyond that, there were also wind gusts of greater than 45 mph recorded in Marietta - including at Dobbins Air Reserve Base - and Athens.
The strong winds are expected to keep temperatures low for a downright frosty Saturday across the region. As the afternoon arrives temperatures aren't expected to rise out of the 30s and 40s with the wind chills making it feel like the 10s and 20s.
That will precede a hard freeze overnight where temperatures will remain in the 20s for several hours.
