Crews work to clear out drains in Atlanta neighborhood where homes flooded from heavy rain

Some West side neighborhoods flood every time it rains. Crews worked on drains Thursday that might cause the issue.

ATLANTA — There will be heavy rain across the region this weekend and metro Atlanta crews are working to clear storm drains in the area.

Washington Park resident Wayne Pittman said his house and yard flood every time there's heavy rain. 11Alive shared his story Wednesday, in which he showed us how water overflows onto his property. This was after rain moved through the area earlier in the week.

He said he complained to the city but feels his calls go unaddressed. However, on Thursday, crews were out clearing up a storm drain across the street.

“He pulled the lid off, and it was filled up all the way to the top,” said Pittman.

The work comes ahead of a second system that will move into the area, bringing more heavy rain.  A Flood Watch has been issued with the threat of an additional one to four inches of rain through Saturday night. Typically, this amount of rain wouldn't be too much of a concern, but it will be falling on already saturated ground and swollen streams, which could heighten the threat of flooding.

Pittman and other residents are filing lawsuits against the city, asking for millions for all the damage they’ve seen. Attorney Meghan Jones is representing the families and said the issues spanned several decades and administrations.

The group spoke about the issues last week.

However, Pittman is happy that Atlanta Watershed Management is taking notice of what’s happening.

“I showed them the drainage system and they said they were going to go back and look at old maps to find out the drainage system back here. That’s one good thing,” said Pittman.

A city spokesman previously said they couldn't comment on pending litigation but detailed ongoing projects to improve the city’s stormwater system.

A Watershed Management spokesperson said  Thursday that crews work on clearing out the drains daily. As for Pittman, his basement is still wet, but all the water has receded.
