Gov. Kemp tells Georgians to 'be prepared' ahead of freezing temperatures

A significant storm system is moving across the southeast Monday and will bring wintry weather to parts of the area.

ATLANTA — Gov. Brian Kemp is telling Georgians to be prepared ahead of freezing temperatures this week. A significant storm system is moving across the southeast on Monday and will bring wintry weather to parts of the area.

The governor shared on the X platform that state and local partners will monitor the weather system.

"Ahead of the freezing temperatures on the way to more parts of Georgia, be prepared for the impacts of this winter weather and take extra care on the roads," he said.

Several school districts have already announced closings for Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. Some are also designating the day for remote learning. In the metro area, students with Marietta City Schools, Cobb County Schools, and Atlanta Public Schools are closed.

Some north Georgia counties -- including a few in metro Atlanta -- are under a Winter Weather Advisory. There's a potential for light freezing rain in portions of north central and northwest Georgia Tuesday morning. This could cause slippery roads.
