Hundreds of DeKalb County residents went without power in nearly 90-degree weather

Storms knocked down trees and power lines in DeKalb County.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Hundreds of DeKalb County residents were without power for hours in nearly 90-degree weather on Monday following storms the night before.

The weather even caused a tree to fall on a home on Chavers Place near Clarkston and crews worked on power lines on Memorial College Avenue on Monday to resolve issues.

Tony Spinucci lives across the street from where the tree fell.

"My wife said, 'That tree was dead. It was going to come down sometime,'" Spinucci said.

Crews told 11Alive that a maple tree split and fell in separate directions.

"It wasn't that windy. It just was a lot of rain," Spinucci said. "It was a river around here, down the road."

Spinucci explained that he hasn't had power since early Monday morning. He saw his lights flickering around 1 a.m.

Ten minutes away, outside of the Brannon Hill Condominiums, Moqtar Muhammed said he hasn't had power since 9 p.m. Sunday.

"And still, I'm waiting on them to fix it," Muhammed said.

Muhammed said at first, alerts from Georgia Power said it expected power to be restored at noon. Later, it changed to 6 p.m.

Many residents walked up the hill to the convenience store or nearby fast-food restaurants because their refrigerators and air conditioning were also out. Muhammed chose to pass the time outside because he said it was cooler.

"It's too...hot," Muhammed continued. "Everybody's outside, not inside."

Neighbors were hoping for a solution before the sun went down.

"I guess they're doing the best they can, but I hope they get it before dark," Spinucci said.

The Georgia Power Outage map showed that restoration was expected for Chavers Place at 6 p.m. and Memorial College Avenue at 5 p.m.
