Hurricane officials are watching the Caribbean closely for another potential tropical system

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the potential for a new storm in the Caribbean Sea.

ATLANTA, Georgia — The last few weeks have been quiet for us here in Georgia. We are still in hurricane season, but the tropics have been quiet, too.

The National Hurricane Center has been watching the Caribbean Sea very closely for a potential storm to develop. There is a 40% chance that a storm could form in the next 7 days.

If the storm holds together, we could see it form into a tropical depression by the end of the week or into the weekend. This means that travel plans near the Caribbean could be impacted. It is still too early to talk about tracks. Our weather impact team will keep an eye on the storm track once it develops.

Hurricane season does not end until the end of November. Temperatures are getting cooler as we head towards the end of fall, but the water in the Caribbean is still warm. If there is any development, this could fuel a storm.

Hurricane season in the Atlantic ends November 30th. However, the Caribbean often sees late-season tropical development. There were no November storms in 2023. Hurricane Nicole in 2022 was one of the recent notable November storms. Nicole was the fourth storm to make landfall in the United States.

Tropical Storm Oscar was the last storm to develop. If this storm becomes a tropical depression, it will be the 16th named storm of the season. The storm could be named Patty by the end of the week.
