Comedian works to help people in North Carolina who are still feeling Helene impacts

Brian Moote is a comedian and has friends in Asheville.

EMERSON, Ga. — One Georgia comedian is working to make sure people in the Peach State can help victims in North Carolina impacted by Helene.

"I just had an idea and RaceTrac was on board with it, where I would just get a truck, you buy water right here, we throw it in the truck, and it’s going straight to the convention center in south Asheville with the Cajun Navy," said Brian Moote.

Moote is a comedian and has friends in Asheville.

"I was just in Asheville Comedy Festival in August," Moote said. "The beautiful downtown, the river district, the arts district. And seeing it decimated and seeing people I know there that are struggling, really just kind of hit me in a way that I wanted to do something."

Helene caused severe damage a few weeks ago when the powerful storm moved through several states.

"They’re not going to have a lot of power or water in a ton of neighborhoods," said Moote. "And they were totally blindsided. They had no idea Helene was going to be this catastrophic for them."

Moote said he knows people in Georgia want to find ways to help.

"They have huge hearts," said Moote of Georgia residents. "But they don’t know what to do other than try to find a link to donate online when, really, it’s super easy just to drop by, buy a case of water for $6, and you’re doing your part and it’s going straight to Asheville."

Moote said he collected more than 100 cases of water on Friday. Along with water bottles, Moote said he is collecting clothes, work gear, tools, and more.

"Basically anything you got, I’m gonna throw it in the truck," Moote said.

On Saturday, Moote said he will be at the RaceTrac in Dawsonville at 1554 Highway 400 S at 10:30 a.m. Then, he said he will head over to Jasper at 1 p.m. at the RaceTrac located at 303 Interstate South Drive.

Moote said the trucks filled with donations are set to leave for North Carolina on Monday.
