North Georgia is in a 'flash drought'

Here's what that means.

ATLANTA — The National Weather Service in Atlanta issued a statement Thursday announcing that we are now in a "flash drought" across North Georgia.

A flash drought occurs when you have extended periods of heat and very little rain.  These conditions create a drought scenario where dry conditions are likely to spread rapidly and intensify quickly.

We have been above average for the entire month of September and we are 6 inches below our annual rainfall average. The soil's moisture content is so depleted that even if it rains, much of it will evaporate before sinking into the soil.

With high heat and little rain in our future for the next week to 10 days, 11Alive's StormTrackers are expecting the areas of severe drought to spread rapidly in the days to come and perhaps even extreme drought will be showing up on our drought monitor map soon.

Although it is always a good idea to conserve water it may be more imminent in the weeks to come as our drought continues to spread and become more extreme across North Georgia.
