Helene causes major flooding in Historic Fourth Ward Park

Spanning 17 acres and featuring a two-acre lake, the park is known for its family-friendly amenities, including an amphitheater, playground, and splashpad.

ATLANTA — Historic Fourth Ward Park has flooded due to heavy rainfall from Helene, affecting the popular park located in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood

The park, which connects to Freedom Park and Piedmont Park via the Beltline, spans 17 acres and features a two-acre lake.

Part of its design is to absorb flooding with its large, sunken retention pond in the middle of the park. That appeared to largely work Friday.

Known for its family-friendly amenities, the park includes an amphitheater for concerts, a playground with climbing structures, and a splashpad for summer fun. The recent storm caused the lake to overflow, resulting in flooding in several areas.

Local officials are advising residents and visitors to avoid the flooded areas and to keep an eye out for updates on the park's condition.
