Multiple rounds of severe storms possible tomorrow

Our active severe weather pattern continues this week.

ATLANTA — The 11Alive StormTrackers are monitoring yet another threat for severe thunderstorms on Thursday.

Much of metro Atlanta and most of Georgia are under a level 3 of 5 threat for severe storms. The chance of severe weather decreases as you go north into the mountains.

Wind gusts up to 60 mph, tornadoes (some possibly strong), and hail up to golf ball size are possible in the level 3 threat area.

It is possible that there could be multiple chances for severe weather Thursday into Thursday night.

The first round of rain will come through in the morning as a line of showers and storms, these could be severe with damaging wind gusts and maybe a tornado. I like this round has a low chance of severe weather compared to the next round.

Our better chance for severe weather comes in the afternoon if the environment can recover from round 1. This second round would be more potent with damaging wind gusts, strong tornadoes, and large hail.

There are still some questions about this forecast.  Similar to Sunday, our severe weather threat could be significantly lowered if the warm air can't make it to I-20 or the atmosphere doesn't recover from round 1.

The potential for tornadoes comes on the heels of severe weather on Easter Sunday that produced a series of tornadoes throughout central and north Georgia, including an EF-3 in Upson and Lamar Counties that was an estimated 1,200 yards - more than half a mile - wide.

That tornado lifted an entire house off its foundation and dropped it onto a highway. There was also an EF-2 in Murray County that left seven people dead at a mobile home park, and several other smaller ones scattered throughout the region.
