Live updates | Thousands without power in north Georgia after severe storms move through

ATLANTA — Due to an increased chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms across north Georgia and metro Atlanta, Tuesday is an 11Alive Weather Impact Alert Day. 

Some of the storms have produced heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds.

11:34 p.m. | 11Alive viewer Bill Coogle sent a picture of a tree down on Highway 53 near Jerusalem Church Road in Picken County. It's now back open after clearing all evening.

10:45 p.m. |  Hall County currently has roughly 9,000 customers without power and 50 trees down in the area. Crews are working to clear the fallen tree debris as quickly as possible, Hall County EMA said. The affected roadways include:

9:44 p.m. | A 27-year-old man is dead after a tree had fallen on top of his car while he was driving in Cherokee County during severe thunderstorms. Deputies found the man dead inside the vehicle when they arrived. The sheriff's office said it happened around 7:50 p.m.

9:28 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Jasper, Henry and Butts counties until 10:15 p.m. 

9:16 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Fayette, Pike, Meriwether, Coweta, Upson, Henry, Butts, Lamar, Clayton and Spalding counties until 10 p.m. 

8:56 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Fulton, Fayette, Coweta, Henry, Clayton and Spalding counties until 9:45 p.m. 

8:50 p.m. | 11Alive viewer Charles Stoecklein sent a picture of a downed tree in Pickens County. It is on Highway 153 before Arrowhead Way.

8:44 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Morgan, Jasper and Putnam counties until 9:30 p.m. 

8:41 p.m. | The Gordon County Sheriff's Office said that deputies have responded to a number of calls of downed trees and power lines in roadways along with other storm-related incidents. There was at least one report of a vacant structure having been damaged by a fallen tree and several traffic signals were disabled. As of now, no injuries have been reported. Drivers should be aware of the possibility of debris in roadways and exercise caution if traveling. 

8:37 p.m. | Hall County's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director Zach Brackett said that there are around 20 trees down across the county, with most of those involving power lines. There are two residences on Morningside Drive with trees on them. There are currently around 13,000 customers without power. Public safety, public works, and road department personnel are working to remove trees as quickly as conditions allow.

8:33 p.m. | Forsyth County Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook and said its 911 center is receiving calls across the county regarding trees and powerlines in the roadways. The sheriff's office is asking for residents to stay off the roads if at all possible. The following roads are currently closed or affected by downed trees and powerlines: 

  • Keith Bridge at Waldrip Rd
  • Shadburn Ferry Rd
  • Chamblee Gap Rd at Bethelview
  • Kentmere Dr at Atlanta Hwy
  • Melody Mizer Ln at Old Atlanta
  • Ann Arbor Dr at Browns Bridge

8:32 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Fayette, Fulton, Douglas and Clayton counties until 9:15 p.m. 

8:01 p.m. | Cherokee County EMA has been responding to downed trees and power lines. Below is a current list: 

  • Knox Bridge Hwy/Mt Olive Church Lane - Tree down
  • 1830 Reavis Mountain Rd - Tree down across road
  • Ball Ground Rd/Dodd Ln - Tree down on power lines
  • 3130 Ball Ground Rd - Tree on power line
  • 6885 Neil Densmore Tr - Tree on line
  • Byrd Hl/Old Canton Rd - Wires hanging off pole
  • 1240 E Main St - Tree on power lines
  • Holly Springs Pkwy/Toonigh Rd - Lines down
  • 2192 Ball Ground Hwy - Trees and wires down
  • S Mccollum Dr/Univeter Rd - Tree across roadway
  • 116 Timberland Dr - Tree on powerline / Tree on fire

7:57 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning issued for Paulding, Douglas and Carroll counties until 8:45 p.m. 

7:52 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warning for Fulton, Paulding, Bartow, Forsyth, Hall, DeKalb, Cherokee, Cobb and Gwinnett counties until 8:30 p.m. 

7:51 p.m. | North Georgia EMC posted to Facebook saying crews are working to restore over 21,000 members impacted in 184 widespread outages following the storms. They are evaluating the extent of the damage and said they will work around the clock to restore power. One can monitor progress throughout the night here

7:30 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Chattooga and Floyd counties until 8:15 p.m.

7:17 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Pickens, Gordon, Bartow, Forsyth, Floyd, Gilmer, Dawson and Cherokee counties until 8 p.m.

6:56 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Pickens, Towns, Hall, Gilmer, Fannin, Dawson and White counties until 7:45 p.m.

6:42 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Pickens, Chattooga, Gordon, Floyd and Gilmer counties until 7:30 p.m.

6:20 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Towns, Gilmer, Fannin, White and Union counties. This is set to expire at 7 p.m.

6:05 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the following counties: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Madison, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Rockdale, Towns, Union, Walton and White counties. This expires at 11 p.m.
