ATLANTA, Georgia — Tuesday's much-needed rainfall broke a few daily rainfall records in Georgia. Heavy rain began this morning and continued throughout most of the afternoon. Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport collected. 1.58" of rain today. That breaks the old record of 1.50" that was set in 1948.
Columbus and Macon, Georgia, have also broken daily rainfall records. Columbus recorded 1.73". Macon recorded 1.42".
The rain is not done yet. We will see showers tapering off throughout the rest of the evening and into the overnight hours. So, those rainfall totals will continue to climb. There are some light rain chances for Wednesday morning.
The rain is needed. In Thursday's latest release of the U.S. Drought Monitor, moderate drought is back in the metro Atlanta area and all of northwest Georgia. This includes Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Clayton, and the rest of the surrounding metro area. This is based on data from Tuesday morning, Nov. 12, and does not include this week's rain or last Thursday's.
