ATLANTA — Atlanta is in the middle of a two-week long heat wave. And this has many people wondering, "are we almost done with the 90s yet?"

The short answer: no, not quite.

However, for those looking for a bit of relief from the heat, there is one stat you may like to hear. Starting Aug. 13, our average high for Atlanta drops from 90 degrees down to 89 degrees, based on climate data from 1991 to 2020.

Although that average high may drop, we still often see 90-degree days even into September. Atlanta's average last 90 degree-day is Sept. 10. The latest ever 90-degree day was Oct. 9 of 1941.

August does look to stay hot for the remainder, as a whole. The August temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center has greater-than-average odds of above-normal temperatures. We can still have cooler days, and also hotter days.

Typically, Atlanta and north Georgia does begin to be impacted by cold fronts and slightly lower humidity as we work through September, even if it stays hot. This helps the overnight lows to drop a little.

As we go further through meteorological fall, those average high temps continue to drop. Starting early October, the average high temp drops from the 80s into the 70s.

Then around Halloween, the average high drops from the 70s into the 60s.

So, if you're miserable in this summer heat, be patient.
