DUNWOODY, Ga. — The Dunwoody High School community was heartbroken on Tuesday after a student died on the school's campus following a medical emergency just a day before.
The student was identified by officials as 15-year-old Mia Dieguez. DeKalb County Fire said crews responded to the school on Monday, where they found the teen in cardiac arrest.
On Tuesday, DeKalb County School District Police announced that they arrested a juvenile in connection to Dieguez's death.
"You never think it's going to happen at your school," Dunwoody High School student Addison Boynich said. "My heart goes out to her family and all her friends that knew her, loved her, and are going to miss her."
Students are still in shock after the incident happened.
School officials said the incident happened as many students were testing. After the medical emergency, the school was placed on lockdown to limit movement within the building.
“It was extremely surprising for me," Boynich added.
Fellow Classmate Asher Venick knew Dieguez after having a class with her last semester.
"It's tragic to see that happen here, especially so close to summer. Everybody is heartbroken, and we’re just going to try to move on,” said Venick.
In a letter to parents, Principal Tom Bass continued, "We will not disclose additional information about the circumstances surrounding this student's passing out of respect for the family's privacy."
The juvenile arrested on Tuesday is facing involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct charges. The juvenile was taken to the DeKalb Regional Youth Detention Center.
To help students cope with what happened, school officials said grief counselors are available.
"Everyone reacts to death differently. Our priority is respecting each other's feelings and emotions. As a family, we encourage you to talk with your child about this incident to help them share their thoughts and reactions," Bass added in the letter.
Vernick expressed his gratitude to the school for making the resources available to them.
“It's nice to know that they care; I’m glad that they are trying to help out. I think a lot of people will use that, and it’s a great resource for the students,” Venick added.
School district officials announced that a student-led balloon vigil will be held for Mia on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Brook Run Park, adjacent to Peachtree Middle School. A district spokesperson also announced that students have set up a memorial inside Dunwoody High School honoring Dieguez.
An online fundraiser has also been set up to help raise money for Dieguez's funeral.
