Second town hall set to address safety concerns at McEachern High School

The town hall will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday.

ATLANTA — Just last week, two people were shot and injured in the McEachern High School parking lot. Now, a meeting will be held tonight at 6 p.m. at the school, where students and parents can voice their concerns.

Cobb County Schools have already had one safety town hall for parents and students following the incident.

During that meeting, some parents broke down in tears as they spoke at the meeting about repeated incidents of threats and violence at the school.

“I was thinking, what if my child is alive or dead?” said one mother as she wept.

A student said she’s angry about all the other students she sees carrying weapons at the school without administrators doing enough to stop it.

“It shouldn’t wait ‘til somebody has to die,” she said.

The shooting at McEachern does not shock them because, they said, students with guns at the school and students fighting each other are routine.

One of the victims of a shooting, 20-year-old Jean Germain, is now a suspect in the case, according to Cobb County Police.

Police also announced they arrested a 17-year-old in Union City who faces charges including two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm on school property.

Law enforcement said the teenager was a witness to the altercation and alleged that he pulled out a pistol and shot two people. The second arrest was announced earlier this week, in which the suspect is a juvenile who, police said, also opened fire but did not wound anyone. Both those two are students at the high school, according to police.
