ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A community is mourning the loss of three 18-year-olds who were tragically killed in a single-vehicle crash in Alpharetta just before 8 p.m. on Tuesday night.
The wreck happened in the northbound lanes of Westside Parkway just past Maxwell Road between Hembree Road, according to Alpharetta Police. The driver of the car lost control, and the car flipped upside down and crashed into the tree line. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.
There were two other people inside the car during the wreck. They were rushed to the hospital, but 11Alive has not learned of their conditions at this time. One of the victims who remains in the hospital is a senior at Alpharetta High School. The second victim in the hospital is a student at Georgia State University and was the driver of the vehicle, police said.
What we know about the 3 victims killed
The three who died in the crash have been identified Wednesday as 18-year-old Aryan Joshi, 18-year-old Sriya Avasarala and 18-year-old Anvi Sharma. Police said Joshi and Avasarala died at the scene, while Sharma died Wednesday at North Fulton Hospital.
Both Avasarala and Sharma were students at the University of Georgia, having just finished their freshman years.
UGA released a statement Wednesday evening regarding their deaths.
"The University of Georgia community mourns the lives lost in this tragic accident. Our deepest condolences go out to their families and loved ones as they navigate this difficult time. We hope their memories bring comfort and strength to all who knew them," the statement read.
Joshi was a senior at Alpharetta High School and was set to graduate in just over a week on May 23. Principal Mike Scheifflee sent a letter to students' parents on Wednesday, sharing the news and asking families to keep his family in their thoughts during the difficult time.
"There are times when it is necessary to communicate news that is painful for all of us. During those times, we must be prepared to support each other and our students. It saddens me to inform you of the death of senior Aryan Joshi," Scheifflee wrote.
