ATLANTA — Nearly two weeks after the Atlanta presidential debate, some Georgia Democrats are still answering questions about President Biden's re-election viability.
On Wednesday morning, MSNBC host Mika Brzesinski asked Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens whether the president seemed "fit for the presidency" during a recent call he participated in with Democratic mayors across the country.
Dickens said that Mr. Biden was "fired up" on the call and "ready to defeat Donald Trump."
The Atlanta mayor added that the president conveyed his commitment to staying in the race for the White House, saying "he's going to run right through the finish line and still be our president."
The mayor's comments come as questions linger about the president's re-election chances following a politically damaging Atlanta debate performance.
The president, meanwhile, has repeatedly said he plans to stay in the race.
Georgia State Senator Jason Esteves acknowledged the controversy during a Wednesday interview for 11Alive's Sunday politics show, The Georgia Vote, but said he continues to back Biden.
"At the end of the day, the president is our nominee," the Democratic state legislator said. "He received a landslide vote in our primary, and Democrats across the state are going to support him. Now, in the meantime, we're having conversations like any healthy political party should on whether he should continue given his age. I will personally support him as long as he's on the ticket."
The state senator touted Biden's performance in office.
"I'm going to support the values and the policies that the Democratic candidate brings forward, and right now, that candidate is President Joe Biden, who has a strong record of success over the last four years," said Esteves.
Representative Nikema Williams -- who chairs the state Democratic party -- made similar comments during a Georgia Vote interview last week.
"Right now, President Biden is the only person who can make the decision if he is going to remain in this race," said Rep. Nikema Williams. "As long as President Biden is at the top of this ticket, I am standing with my president because he has stood with the American people time and time again."
