'I was on cloud nine' | Tara Davis-Woodhall shares heartwarming feeling of taking home gold medal in 2024 Paris Games

She jumped 7.10 meters to secure the women's long jump title, earning her first-ever Olympic gold medal.

PARIS, France — Former Georgia Bulldog Tara Davis-Woodhall is on what she's calling "cloud nine" after she took home her first gold medal in her Olympic career.

She jumped 7.10 meters to secure the women's long jump title, earning her first-ever Olympic gold medal. Her Team USA, teammate Jasmine Moore took home the bronze in the event.

Davis-Woodhall spoke with 11Alive's Cheryl Preheim sharing her excitement for winning the gold.

"I was just on cloud nine the entire day," she said. "I dreamed of this moment for so long. It hasn't set in yet. Once I get my medal, I think it's going to really set in."

The 25-year-old was at UGA for one season before transferring to the University of Texas. During that one year, Davis-Woodhall broke Klaudia Siciarz's world under-20 record in the 60-meter hurdles at 7.98 seconds during the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

"I have worked through so much adversity, and I'm just so proud of myself. My entire career has not been this steady plan that I thought it would be, so to come out on top, to be No. 1 undefeated this season, my hard work is paying off," she added.

She spoke about having her husband, Hunter Woodhall, supporting her at her side during her journey. She told 11Alive she is excited to see her husband compete in the Paralympics, which starts on August 30.

Following the momentous achievement, the Olympic champion could be seen hugging her husband, paralympic sprinter Hunter Woodhall. The couple radiated joy and love.

"It just was a relief. He's been by my side this entire journey, and just even being able to have him there is so special, and he told me. He was the first person to call me an Olympic champion. It means more for sure," Davis-Woodhall added.

After snagging the gold in the women's long jump, she made celebratory snow angels in the sand pit.

"We are calling it the sand angel now. I had to do it. It was so natural. That's my place. That sand pit is my home, and there is no place like it," she said. "There's no words that can describe winning like winning an Olympic gold title is unbelievable. I worked so hard for this moment and for it to finally have paid off with all of my hard work and sacrifices; that gold medal is going to give it to me."

Who is Tara Davis-Woodhall?

This was her second Olympic Games, as she placed 6th in the long jump in Tokyo in 2020. According to Team USA, she broke the American junior record for the indoor long jump at the Dumanis Sports Group Prep Classic in Frisco, Texas in 2017. She was also named Ventura County Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2017.

The youngest of five siblings always tried to bring a cowboy hat to meets to represent the University of Texas. And her relationship with her husband is bringing all the butterflies for those watching the games as photos show them lovingly celebrating her win. She's married to Paralympian Hunter Woodhall, whom she met in 2017 at a track meet during high school.
