Thousands without power, trees down after severe storms move through north Georgia

We have been keeping track of downed trees and power lines across the metro Atlanta and north Georgia region.

ATLANTA — Thousands are without power in Georgia following a strong line of severe thunderstorms and winds knocked down trees and power lines in the area.

Many reports of damage are coming in all across north Georgia and metro Atlanta on Tuesday. According to Georgia Power, over 2,000 people are still without power. 

11Alive has received reports of storm damage in far north Georgia counties, as well as Cherokee and Forsyth counties. The storms even tragically left one 27-year-old man dead in Canton on Tuesday after a large tree collapsed on his car while he was driving just after 7:45 p.m.

--Hall County's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director Zach Brackett said that there are around 50 trees down across the county and 9,000 customers without power as of 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Public safety, public works and road department personnel are working to remove trees as quickly as conditions allow. The power companies are also working to restore power. Hall County is encouraging people to stay off the roadways to allow crews to work as quickly as possible.

--Forsyth County Sheriff's Office posted to Facebook and said its 911 center is receiving calls across the county regarding trees and powerlines in the roadways. The sheriff's office is asking for residents to stay off the roads if at all possible. The following roads are currently closed or affected by downed trees and powerlines: 

  • Keith Bridge at Waldrip Rd
  • Shadburn Ferry Rd
  • Chamblee Gap Rd at Bethelview
  • Kentmere Dr at Atlanta Hwy
  • Melody Mizer Ln at Old Atlanta
  • Ann Arbor Dr at Browns Bridge

--Cherokee County EMA has been responding to downed trees and power lines. Below is a current list: 

  • Knox Bridge Hwy/Mt Olive Church Lane - Tree down
  • 1830 Reavis Mountain Rd - Tree down across road
  • Ball Ground Rd/Dodd Ln - Tree down on power lines
  • 3130 Ball Ground Rd - Tree on power line
  • 6885 Neil Densmore Tr - Tree on line
  • Byrd Hl/Old Canton Rd - Wires hanging off pole
  • 1240 E Main St - Tree on power lines
  • Holly Springs Pkwy/Toonigh Rd - Lines down
  • 2192 Ball Ground Hwy - Trees and wires down
  • S Mccollum Dr/Univeter Rd - Tree across roadway
  • 116 Timberland Dr - Tree on powerline / Tree on fire

--The Gordon County Sheriff's Office said that deputies have responded to a number of calls of downed trees and power lines in roadways along with other storm-related incidents. There was at least one report of a vacant structure having been damaged by a fallen tree and several traffic signals were disabled. As of now, no injuries have been reported. Drivers should be aware of the possibility of debris in roadways and exercise caution if traveling.
