A four-legged rescue: Georgia man navigates flood waters with dog in tow

A man grabbed his kayak and pup to paddle out of his flooded home.

ATLANTA — Helene's power overnight is being felt across metro Atlanta.

Emergency crews, rescue teams and Georgia residents are now grappling with the extent of the storm's overall impact - assessing downed trees, thousands without power - and now - how to navigate flooded roads.

11Alive's Rebecca Lindstrom was reporting live from Vining's this morning, where homes close to the Chattahoochee River are seeing water levels increasingly rise, when she spotted an Atlanta man using his kayak to evacuate his dog from his flooded home.

In addition to roads and neighborhoods, a number of Metro Atlanta and north Georgia waterways remain under flood warnings from Helene, including creeks in Marietta, Acworth, and Mableton.

At least 24 people have been rescued from flood waters in the state due to Tropical Storm Helene. Gov. Brian Kemp announced Friday in a midday update that there are multiple structures around the state where people are trapped and rescuers are trying to reach them.

Cobb County public safety officials shared a video of a water rescue as well, advising that people to "turn around, don't drown" as they helped a woman escape her car.
