Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall late Thursday as a major hurricane before moving into Georgia overnight.

ATLANTA — Hurricane Helene is due to make landfall on Thursday evening as a major storm, possibly even as strong as a Category 4 hurricane.

The storm is expected to roll into the metro Atlanta area late Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing strong winds and torrential rain.

Helene is about to undergo rapid intensification leading up to landfall late Thursday near Apalachicola. Helene is currently producing sustained winds of 90 mph with stronger gusts as it moves NNE at 12 mph.

Hurricane Helene is forecast to quickly intensify as it moves through the warm water of the Gulf of Mexico, becoming a major hurricane.  It will make landfall late Thursday along Florida's Big Bend region, not far from Apalachicola. In anticipation of the storm's impacts, Georgia's governor issued a State of Emergency to free up resources.
