Where is Tropical Storm Helene right now?

Helene underwent rapid intensification leading up to landfall late Thursday near Apalachicola.

ATLANTA — Helene made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida just around 11:30 p.m. Thursday as a major hurricane, and and in the overnight early hours of Friday has been moving north through Georgia.

At the 5 a.m. advisory, it had weakened to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

Most recent location from 5 a.m. National Hurricane Center update: 

  • 40 miles east of Macon and 100 miles southeast of Atlanta, in the area of Wilkinson County
  • Moving north at 30 mph, likely to impact Athens area most directly

There was no 6 a.m. update, but you can see below the center of the storm has moved up just south of Athens as of around 6:15 a.m.

Helene strengthened to a "dangerous" category 4 hurricane just after 6:30 p.m., Thursday before it made landfall late Thursday around 11:30 p.m. near Apalachicola, along Florida's Big Bend region. It crossed into Georgia still as a hurricane before being downgraded to a tropical storm Friday, after the 5 a.m. advisory.
