ATLANTA — Helene made landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida just around 11:30 p.m. Thursday as a major hurricane, and and in the overnight early hours of Friday has been moving north through Georgia.
At the 5 a.m. advisory, it had weakened to a tropical storm, with maximum sustained winds of 70 mph.

As of 11 a.m., the National Hurricane Center still has Helene classified as a tropical storm. Radar shows the storm has largely cleared metro Atlanta, and is now mostly over the Carolinas and Tennessee.

Helene strengthened to a "dangerous" category 4 hurricane just after 6:30 p.m., Thursday before it made landfall late Thursday around 11:30 p.m. near Apalachicola, along Florida's Big Bend region. It crossed into Georgia still as a hurricane before being downgraded to a tropical storm Friday, after the 5 a.m. advisory.
