ATLANTA — This month will go down in the record books as the driest October in Atlanta history. Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (where climate data is kept) received only trace amounts of rain throughout the month, allowing the city a 30-day dry streak.
Flooding rains from Hurricane Helene in September kept Georgia drought-free for much of the month, but drought is now spreading across the state. All of north Georgia is "abnormally dry" or in "moderate drought," and nearly 95% of the state is now experiencing some form of drought.
It has been a summer and fall of extremes. June, August, and October fell inches short of what is considered average rainfall, while July and September of this year were both in the top five wettest of their perspective months.
Atlanta remains in a 14" surplus of rain for the year, but without any widespread, decent chance for rain in the forecast, drought will likely worsen in the coming weeks.
