ATLANTA — More amazing photos of the northern lights are being shared by 11Alive viewers.
Viewers from across metro Atlanta and north Georgia are sending in their photos of the bright red, purple and green lights that make an unbelievable phenomena rarely seen this far down south.
That's because there is a G5 Geomagnetic Storm Observation across the United States on Friday, the first time it has ever happened here since 2003. Also known formally as the aurora borealis, the northern lights are most typically found in high-latitude regions like the Arctic and Antarctic.
This solar storm exceeded the original forecasts from the Space Weather Prediction Center and the northern lights have been spotted in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Here is what 11Alive viewers have sent in so far! We will continue to update the gallery as more photos come in.
