Aftermath of storms | A look at damage across Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina

Storms swept through parts of the region on Memorial Day. A day later, crews are examining the damage, including dozens of uprooted trees and destroyed buildings.

JASPER, Ga. — Strong storms swept through parts of Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina on Memorial Day. 

On Tuesday, crews examined the storm damage, including dozens of uprooted trees and toppled-over barns and fences. 

Coweta County, Georgia, EF-1 tornado

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado went through part of Coweta County, with estimated peak winds of up to 90 mph and a path of 3.48 miles long.

Jasper, Georgia, storm damage 

In Jasper, Georgia, Amicalola EMC posted on social media Tuesday morning that it's down to 111 power outages in 16 separate locations. 

"Our crews made big strides late yesterday. This morning we are down to 352 consumers out of power. As expected, additional broken poles have been found, and some are not accessible by truck," officials wrote in the update. 

Amicalola EMC said broken poles were found in the following areas: 

  • Ray Mtn Road
  • Cain Trail
  • Pearl Johnson
  • Hwy 183 and 136, where the highway splits

Randolph County, Alabama, EF-1 tornado 

In Randolph County, Alabama, photos show snapped trees, a mobile home that was moved off of its foundation and an awning that came down on a pickup truck. 

Officials said there were also several downed powerlines in the county. 

11Alive's Tresia Bowles is in Graham, Alabama, the northeastern part of Randolph County, where she spoke with Alethea Olds. She said her barn is ruined and her home is facing extensive damage. 

Olds said she credits her grandson, Austin, for saving her life.

In an update Tuesday evening, officials with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham confirmed there was an EF-1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 110 mph.

Clay County, North Carolina, storm damage 

In Clay County, North Carolina, Emergency Management officials and fire crews were dispatched to the Penland Point Community on Monday morning after a tree fell down on a camper trailer. 

When officials arrived, they said they found an 18-year-old girl who died after a large tree fell on the camper trailer. 

Clay County Emergency Services posted on social media that she was a senior at Tuscola High School in Haywood County who was visiting with friends over Memorial Day weekend. 

"All of Clay County Emergency Services mourn this tragic loss with the victim’s family, friends, classmates, and community," officials added in the post.
