DUNWOODY, Ga. — A police incident report describes how first responders attempted to save the life of a 15-year-old Dunwoody High student who died after a medical emergency at school this week, as well as some of the moments in the classroom leading up to the emergency.
The 15-year-old in the incident was identified this week as Mia Dieguez. A juvenile under the age of 18 was arrested and is facing involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct charges over Dieguez's death.
According to the incident report from the Dunwoody Police Department, officers responded to a classroom where Dieguez was on the ground "unconscious and not breathing."
School resource officers and nurses had already utilized an automated external defibrillator (AED) and the first responding Dunwoody PD officer began to apply CPR when he did not detect a pulse from Dieguez's wrist.
That officer applied three rounds of chest compressions, the report states, before DeKalb County Fire Rescue personnel "arrived and took over life-saving measures."
It adds that school personnel had administered two doses of Narcan due to the possibility of drugs playing a role in the medical emergency.
The teacher in the classroom spoke to the Dunwoody PD officer and said the 15-year-old girl had come to class "appearing unwell and sickly." The teacher said it was "typical" that she might fall asleep in class, and when class began, she "rested her head on her desk."
"Shortly after, Mia requested to go to the nurse's office for water," the incident report states. "Upon returning, Mia relocated to another desk and rested her head again for the duration of the class."
The teacher believed Dieguez was sleeping until the bell rang for lunch and she still did not move, the report indicates. It says other students attempted to wake her up and noticed skin discoloration and lack of breathing.
Dieguez was ultimately taken to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital of Atlanta, the report states, where "hospital staff took over life-saving measures" which were unsuccessful.
The report mentions several instances of speculation about whether drugs played a role; no official cause of death has been released nor has any toxicology findings. Police have said the teen was in cardiac arrest when officers arrived.
An online fundraiser has also been set up to help raise money for Dieguez's funeral service.
