ATLANTA — As Hurricane Helene approaches Georgia, now is the time to prepare a plan—and that includes one for your furry friends. During severe weather, it is important for your pets to be ready alongside you for the storm.
“As Georgia prepares for Hurricane Helene, it’s important that your family safety plans include pet safety, as well," First Lady Marty Kemp posted on X.
Here are some key steps from the State of Georgia to take to make sure your companions remain safe:
Make an Emergency Plan
Just as you wouldn’t leave a family member behind, pets must never be left alone in an emergency. Abandoning them could result in them becoming lost, injured—or worse.
Key Steps:
- Buddy System: Arrange for a trusted neighbor to check on your pets if you’re not home when disaster strikes.
- Shelter Considerations: Most public shelters don’t allow pets due to health regulations. Plan alternative accommodations, such as pet-friendly hotels or boarding facilities along your evacuation route.
- Vet and Boarding Information: Locate nearby veterinarians or animal hospitals near your evacuation shelter and add this information to your pet's emergency kit in case of medical needs.
- Out-of-Town Contacts: If possible, arrange for an out-of-town friend or relative to care for your pet if local options fall through.
- Microchipping: Ensure your pet’s microchip information is up to date with your contact details, as well as those of an emergency contact outside the immediate area. In a disaster, being able to track your pet could be lifesaving.
Prepare With A Pet Ready Kit
A well-prepared Pet Ready Kit can make all the difference during an emergency. Here’s what to pack:
- Food and Water: At least a three-day supply of food and water, stored in airtight containers
- Medicines and Records: Pack any necessary medications and medical records for your pet.
- Important Documents: Keep adoption papers, vaccination records, and microchip information in your kit.
- First Aid Supplies: Include items such as bandages, scissors, antibiotic ointments, and a pet first aid guide.
- Collar, Harness, and ID: Ensure your pet has up-to-date tags and a sturdy leash.
- Crate or Carrier: If evacuation is necessary, a safe and comfortable crate is essential for transporting your pet.
- Sanitation: Bring pet litter, plastic bags, and cleaning supplies to manage waste.
- Photo of You and Your Pet: This will help identify your pet if you get separated. Include details about your pet’s breed, age, and identifying features.
- Familiar Comfort Items: Familiar items like their favorite toys, bedding, and treats can help keep your pet calm during the chaos.
